About Us
The Challenge Ministry began in 1992, as an outreach to ten boys who were being regularly beaten by police
because they were begging or food - one of the boys was only three. After witnessing the beating, Cheri and
several friends began a feeding program. Quickly realizing this was a temporary solution, the Challenge Ministry
expanded to provide education and counseling. Located in Kawangware - one of the worst slums in Nairobi -
the center offered an alternative to street life. The center provided food, literacy training, basic work skills and
ethics. Challenge clubs comprised the core of the program. They were designed to encourage boys and girls
to come off the streets. Each club was lead by committed Christians, some of whom were former street
children. Clubs included: reading, drama, soccer, art, literacy, music, crafts, Bible study and weightlifting.
From 1999 until January 2003, Challenge Ministries operated the Light and Power Center, a drop in center
located in the center of Kitale town. Over 50 street kids would come for literacy training, food, hygiene and clubs.
In January 2003, the Light and Power Center was opened at The Challenge Farm located 7km northeast of
Kitale town.
The Challenge Farm today is a home for 103 street children. It is also an accredited elementary and high
school, attended by many community children. The Challenge Farm will continue to serve Kitale as long as God
